MySQL in Slackware 10 , how to start ? ? ?

I've installed MySQL with the following steps :

Download the source file and put it in /usr/src .
Quote:
groupadd mysql
useradd -g mysql -c "MySQL Server" -d /dev/null -s /sbin/nologin mysql

cd /usr/local/src/mysql-4.0.20

chown -R root.root *

./configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/mysql \
--localstatedir=/usr/local/mysql/data \
--disable-maintainer-mode \
--with-mysqld-user=mysql \
--with-unix-socket-path=/tmp/mysql.sock \
--without-comment \
--without-debug \
--without-bench

make

make install

chown -R root:mysql /usr/local/mysql

chown -R mysql:mysql /usr/local/mysql/data

cp support-files/my-medium.cnf /etc/my.cnf

chown root:sys /etc/my.cnf

chmod 644 /etc/my.cnf

echo "/usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql" >> /etc/ld.so.conf

ldconfig

cd /usr/local/mysql/bin
for file in *; do ln -s /usr/local/mysql/bin/$file /usr/local/bin/$file; done

Now I can not start up mySQL server ( I guest that go to /usr/local/mysql/ , run mysql ) .

If I continue to follow :

Quote:
cp ./support-files/mysql.server /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql
chmod +x /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql
/sbin/chkconfig --level 3 mysql on
, MySql will start when I boot up my computer but I dont want to do so . I want to boot it up nomaly .

How should I do ? ? ?

' cp ./support-files/mysql.server /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql '

That is good for distribution with sysvinit scripts based but not with slackware. Why not use the official package ? You will able to start mysql whenever you want by chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld and run :

/usr/bin/mysqld_safe --datadir=/var/lib/mysql &

I want to do it myself and want to learn how to config it more security .
