How do I start mysql

I did the full install of Fedora core 1. the book says to type

# bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &

from the /usr/local/mysql directory, but there is no such directory

So how do I start mysql?

Did you install MySQL when you installed Fedora? In Add/Remove programs and under Database make sure you select MySQL as the database. Or download it from If you do not have that directory there is a good chance the program is not installed.

I did it

[root@fedora root]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld start
Iniciando MySQL: [ OK ]
[root@fedora root]# mysqladmin -u root password 'xxxyyy'
[root@fedora root]# mysqladmin -u root -h fedora password 'xxxyyy'

To automate it so that it runs at every system boot up ..

$ chkconfig --add mysqld
