Discovering Network Workstations

Does anyone know of a way I can get a list of the WS names that are on the local network by a script.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

You could use nmap to scan an entire network like
nmap 192.168.0.0/24

Then parse the output. It may be usefull to get which ports are open too.
If you need just get the connected hosts to the network, maybe there is a more
clever solution though
