Creating an RTF Enabled UI or Editor

Hi Folks!

How do we go about creating a Rich Text Format User Interface such as an editor on a Webpage? For example, Yahoo! Mail and GMail email composers provide such RTF enabled editors.

Could anyone provide an example of such an RTF that can at least display images (JPEG, GIF, emoticons, etc.) when directly pasted in the editor? Other functionality such as Bold and Italic Faces, etc. then would be straightforward to bed implemented.

One more thing: Do we need JavaScript or some other programming tools to write an RTF enabled editor?

I have seen some editors that even let you create/draw tables, lists, and other such Word Processor related stuffs. For example, Google Docs. However, Google Docs are very advanced and I want only simple RTF UI for my web application that can enable users to include (copy/paste) images, create lists (numbered / bullet-ed), stylize text with Bold, Italic, Underlined faces, use different Font Size in different sections of the matter/page, and also create Hyperlinks.

Thanks!

That is excellent! I never knew it. How comes it?

Well, I just checked their License page: http://ckeditor.com/license and found that it could not be appropriate to integrate it on a website which is not personal or educational as for business purposes it would require certain fees/charges.

Well, those are ready made stuffs. So, how do we make the "textarea" tag an RTF one?

You will find your answers in the documentation for either editor: if you're going to try TinyMCE though, you could start with this page.
