I've been looking for something like this for ages and never found one. The closest I've ever found was wordgrinder, and I don't think that does RTF.
What I would really like is something like the old WordPerfect or Word for Dos that can handle standard document files (rtf, odt, doc), and I've always been surprised nothing like that seems to exist in Linux.

X11 rtf editor
If you're still looking, try RtfEd. It's an X11 rtf editor.
It's freeware, simple to use, and saves files as RTF,TXT,HTML,PDF.

You can use cliword which will edit/format your documents (including rtf), that you can run on Linux, Windows, and Mac.
Cliword costs 250 euros, and can come with clisheet.
