compiling kconfig error


hai,
I am using an UBUNTU linux kernel 2.6.12. I have gcc 4.0 but i get errors when i try to complie packages. This is the error message i get:

This is the message when i try to recompile the kernel.

root@cranium:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.11# make xconfig
HOSTCXX scripts/kconfig/qconf.o
HOSTLD scripts/kconfig/qconf
/usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux-gnu/4.0.2/../../../../lib/libdl.so: undefined reference to `_dl_tls_get_addr_soft@GLIBC_PRIVATE'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/qconf] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

Please suggest a remedy!
