click file to launch a named application

Could anyone tell me how, or point me to where i can find out, to launch a specific/named application when i click on a file with a specific file extension (or mime type?).

I have created an application which "plays" a file of a certain type.
On PC a file-association is created and clicking the file launches the application via the commandline with the name & path of the file as commandline arguments.

I am new to Linux so i am unaware of how applications are run and how file associations are made.

I believe that system events may be used to pass the info to the application rather than command line arguments but i do not know how this is done nor how the file associations / mime-types are set up (programmatically)

any help is greatly appreciated

Ta
