Cant copy dot files with cp -r ??

Hi all,
Simple problem , I want to copy all files in ~/ to another folder so

#!/bin/sh
#Main back up shell for ~/home/gaspode/
echo "Backing up files as of"
date
cp -vur /home/gaspode/ /bup2/Fcbackup
date >> /bup2/Fcbackup/BULogT1

However ,try as I will the thing will not copy any dot files ,all normal folders and sub folders no trouble but anthing with the dreaded dot is no go.

I have tried large and small "R" (cp -vur / cp -vuR ) and it makes no difference.
all my googleing tell me that this should catch ALL files but it won't.

Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong ?
Ta
