Will the ampersand (&) help you? For instance, if I want to start an xterm, but still keep the one I'm writing in, I do
Code:
xterm &
at the prompt.

just type:
Code:
screen vim demo.txt &
if you have an app like quake 2 that runs in the background and spews output, then just exit/logout and open a new one (if u are running xterm).

hope that helps

P.S. you could also
Code:
screen -dm vim demo.txt
