SimplyMepis 6.5 on a VM

Hi all

Tried installing Simply Mepis 6.5 on a VMWare Virtual machine. When I booted it, got a kernel panic message. Anyone had any success in getting it installed? THanks.

You need to use initrd option in GRUB for SCSI drives or you need to use an IDE virtual drive in VMWare.

Ensure you have downloaded and installed the headers for your running kernel.
With Mepis running (e.g. with just the desktop open), click on the "VM" option in the toolbar. Select "Install VMWare tools". Go to your CDRom drive and you'll see the vmware tools installer. Copy it to your home dir, unpack and follow the installation instructions.
Just accept the defaults when the script runs, and set it to run the config automatically when installation is complete.

Hope this helps.

Hi Aspn

Thanks for your response. I did as you said, but when I did it as me, I couldn't see the Cd-rom drive where the package was. But I tried it as root and found it an put the package at a place where I could find it. Now I need to know how to install the kernel headers for SimplyMepis. I tried the vmware-install.pl and it couldn't find them. Any help with that would be more than appreciated. With Xandros, we have Xandros Network, where we can get the kernel headers installed. Not sure how to get them installed with SimplyMepis. Thanks.

Hi all

Thanks for your help. I got the kernal headers installed and got Vmware tools install. All is working great. If Xandros goes out of business, SimplyMepis is my O/S. Have a great day.
