Is MEPIS 8 expected this year? Just curious.

Simply MEPIS 7.9.70 beta 1 has been out for about three weeks now, based on Lenny with a 2.2.26-1 kernel.

newbiesforever,

I do not believe there is a road map for Mepis-8 or the next version Mepis-9 and when they will go gold...

I presume the final releases of Mepis-8 will depend upon how much time and refinement warren might provide in the distro, before its operating ease and capabilities reach his standards for release... I like the second beta release of Mepis-8, if my memory serves me well it appears to be a bit more stable and complete than the second release of Mepis-7 last year...

All of the above is my opinion and sincere speculation, based upon my limited experience with the distro's history. Mepis as far as I know and enjoy has been good for me, with the many updated software applications that have been back-ported to run in mepis-7...

I think that a good number of Mepis supporters have done a great job assisting Mepis-7 in its new position as a rolling release with many newer updated software packages, thus taking it many steps above the previous 6.5.02 version I started using...

I understand there are a group of Mepis users with a longing for the older versions, I do not have that experience to rely upon, my Linux usage and experience is a shorter duration. I am still trying to toss the Microsoft methods and understanding into the wind, to be more productive using my computer...

So far I like what I have seen/used of the Mepis-8 beta, running version 7 & the 2nd beta side by side. I used the same procedure last year running a stable 6.5.02, and comparing it to Mepis-7 during its beta testing period...

That's exactly how I'm doing it. I have M8 B2 in one partition, and use it for things like the new Gimp (2.6) and QGIS (11.0). And I am slowly moving stuff over from the Home partition, setting up the configuration and installing the other apps I use whenever I have time.

I like starting with a clean install because it takes away all the mistakes I have been making over the last year...

wcc1776,

I think that's a 2.6.26.2 kernel --
from http://www.mepis.org/node/14194:
Quote:
Some of the important packages included with the beta are: 2.6.26.2 kernel, Xorg 7.3, KDE 3.5.9, OpenOffice 3.0beta2, Firefox 3.0.1, Sun Java 6.0, Amarok 1.4.10, mplayer 1.0.rc2, libglib2.0 2.16.4, libgtk2.0 2.12.11, and QT 4.4.0.

You're right archtoad6, Warren updated the kernel, after that post. I believe the version he upgraded to is 2.6.26-5.

As of the 20th of this month, the SimplyMEPIS betas will be based upon the 2.6.27 kernel.

Current beta release is 3 (SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.90-beta_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.90-beta_64.iso) and is available via the usual sites ( See: http://www.mepis.org/mirrors and http://mepis.gabston-howell.org/ )

(Hey Allan--good to see you around again, hope all is well.)

Anybody interested in MEPIS 8 and the community should check out the new community web site: http://www.mepiscommunity.org. We are all pretty excited about the new kernel decision, and everybody is testing the third beta at the moment. Glad to have help...

Why mepiscommunity.org?

[What's wrong w/ | How is it different from ] mepislovers.org?

Sounds like duplication & fragmentation to me, but I'd love to hear some good reasons why not.

I have been seeding both the 32 & 64-bit beta3 versions...

Either torrent you want is a few from the top of the list...

Not everyone like the way mepislivers is run.
Nothing wrong with choices.

Same question you could ask on why mepis itself exists.

Unhappy 7.90b-64 no FILES FOUND, Sector block errors, now blank screen

Just started experimenting w/ another GNU/Linux distro to try on my Asus Gaming series LTs (about 1 year old Intel G1S-B1 & AMD G2K-A1 machines}. Had started 7.0 when I finally found 8 betas.

I think I like the Mepis manual that installs from 7.0 Live-CD, may even get to love it, IF I can activate my AR5418 WiFi (Q1). Nada luck so far following all the instructions. Numerous reboots & setting in Network Asst & manager! ifconfig Unknown command as user or root

Dislike Mepis root & user session log in stlye, prefer entering root PW (sudo method) AND the fact that many GRUB are designed for ONLY dual-boot w/ M$ Windoz style OS. I have attempted to load 5 or 6 of my latest choices, BUT the bootloaders only recognize the current install & the immediately previous install. {BL only displays 2 choices} Sometimes I get Error 13 when attempting the 1st of 3 when both MBR & Boot part were used alternately or NO choice offered during install.
Have attempted to use a boot partition as described in LQ wiki(s) vs just to the MBR as common practice (aka Old-School?) before. Saw some notes about having to edit grublist or words to that effect not sure how to obtain the UUIDs [Q2].

AT6, They are one & the same as of very recently. One is archived as R O. Other is active for new Q & A.

I just Dld a M8b# (7.9.90beta-64) this AM, burned ISO9660 w/ K3b & verifried written data, BUT no boot/load haung @ accessing mepis cdrom on sr0! At 1st my screen showed something about NO FIles found on the CD, happened 2 or 3 x, never proceeded to "creating /ramdisk ..." message line.
- - - -
And now after having viewed CD contents it appears to start booting the Live CD (Default &/or Failsafe? BUT after many messages (Just beyond configuring Live CD)
COnfiguring console for a us keymap
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block #########
SQUASH FS Error
- - - -
This last time seemed to (Default=fewer Buffer I/O error lines, Failsafe has more ?) proceed to Live CD login OK then screen blanked !*!

Q3: Do I have bad Download(DL) or is it common to try many times to wakeup a Mepis beta CD ?? Or is it a hardware error? LT seems to work OK!

Last edited by digital8doug; 10-27-2008 at 02:40 PM. Reason: AFTER ABOUT 15 REBOOTS IT IS APPEARING TO WORK, WAS ABLE TO LOG IN AS DEMO !?!?

www.mepiscommunity.org is a new website developed by several Mepislovers members, with Warren Woodford's approval. If you haven't checked it out yet, give it a look.
