KDE 3.4 - any luck? broken? requirements?

I read somewhere that you can add a listing to the repository for KDE 3.4.1 (from kde.org or something reputable); the next poster said it would break the install. Has anyone tried this? Any successes or failures?

What are the minimum sys req.s for 3.4.1? I am giving an uncle an upgrade from W98 to Mepis 3.3.1 and I would love to include KDE 3.4, but I'm not sure if the machine can handle it. Its a Celeron machine, an old Gateway "Essential 566" with on-board video. Pretty low, really... dare I try?

I use it in debian unstable and it's faster and more stable than 3.3... if you use debian, the repositories are:
deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./
deb-src http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./
which distro?

There are quite a few bugs in 3.4 thats why its not in unstable yet. The alioth repo is an experimental repository. If you are new to linux my best advice is to only upgrade when you know it wont break something. Experimental packages, more often than not, break stuff and you will be required to know how to fix it.

That is wrong, and these packages are not buggy at all :-)
for info about *why* it is not yet in unstable --> http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2.../msg00057.html
after I agree that this is not as stable as the stable realease but the fact that it's only for people knowing enough debian are true for the whole unstable branch... alioth is just a temporary server ( an by the way even if the kde package in alioth and experimental are now the same... alioth is not the experimental branch...)

# Debian experimental
# deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ ../project/experimental main
# deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ ../project/experimental main contrib non-free
# GNOME 2.10 pending packages
# deb http://pkg-gnome.alioth.debian.org/debian/ experimental main
#Debian KDE 3.4 Team updates
# deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.0/ ./
# deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./

Alioth is NOT the experimental repository. Although KDE 3.4 is in experimental. KDE 3.4 works great.

it works fine in debian but in mepis you end up with a broken trash system and/or multiple trash bins. Also a few other bugs we have seen. If a person is new to linux they shouldnt be using packages from experimental or alioth.
