GNOME - unable to access system configuration

I installed the gnome desktop on MEPIS. Everything works except I cannot change any settings as root. For example - if i want to change the system time I get a error: Configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.

I cannot change any system settings at all as root, in gnome.

Can someone please tell me what to do here to fix this?
Thanks

Are you saying that you are logged in as root? (never do this).

Mepis, unlike Ubu, doesn't castrate Linux by disabling root. For those who are willing to take responsibility for themselves and their systems, it works well.

To the OP:
Mepis is really specifically configured to run KDE. If you reall want to use Gnome, you will probably want to chose a different distro.

wow ctkroetor - ive used linux & unix since 1998 - slackware, mandrake, debian, redhat, FreeBSD ETC ETC.
Your post was really HELPFUL. I didnt know that. You are sure a genius.

In any case, I've now started using enlightenment 17 - which is a lot quicker for my hardware and solves my problem. By the way - i was able to adjust the settings in KDE and the problem in gnome is caused by dbus and system-tools-backends settings that need adjusting.
