where can you install software in folder?

As for Firefox, I followed the process with tar.gz but it end up new folder in kde-dmzeplin folder next to tar.gz.

But as for Mozilla 1.7, I followed and installed in usr/lib/mozilla. I was wondering where I was supposed to save the software in one folder?

Since, I know in Windows XP, I usually save all folders in "program files".. But Linux??

Also, I was wondering which is better suitable Firefox or Mozilla??

Thanks, David

I just extracted the tarball into my home directory... by tar -xpvf firefox-filename.tar.bz2 then cd into the directory it creates, then ./firefox-installer, and it should install fine....

I use firefox over mozilla because it has far less bloat.

If installing it for multiple users, run the installer as root then install it into /usr/local/firefox and then create a symlink to /usr/local/bin so that simply typing "firefox" will run the program. e.g.

$tar -xzvf firefox-installer-version.tar.gz
$cd firefox-installer
$su -c "./firefox-installer"

When the installation is complete do

$su -
#ln -s /usr/local/firefox/firefox /usr/local/bin/.

Hey thanks...

I found simple way to go EasyUmpi and doing the download software from Mandrake Center. Install the software itself without any worry or type in root etc...

But I see that the latest version has been little lagging?

Thanks again, I think I begins to like Mandrake since I have been switch three different Dist.

Mandrake is def. one of the easiest distros around..

I wasn't aware there was an RPM in one of the urpmi repositories! I've been going from source!

The latest FireFox rpm in the urpmi repositories is actually the "pre"-final release. If you want the latest release, you still have to go from the FireFox source. redazz' instructions a couple posts up explains how to do it best.

You can find the 1.0 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird in rpm form for Mandrake 10.1 on the NORLUG site.

http://mirror.datapipe.net/norlug/mandrake-10.1/RPMS/

Goto their main site for instructions on how to set up their server as a source for URPMI or download the rpm files yourself and install them via urpmi (as root).

urpmi /path/to/mozilla-firefox-1.0-2.norlug.i586.rpm
