What else beside ALSA?

ALSA is not working for my computer - no matter what it does not recognize the sound chip. Alsaconf searches for legacy chips - when I check the box of the ESS chip that is in my computer, it comes back no chip found. WHen I leave all boxes checked, it loads the generic driver - which is fine with me - but still when I try to run Alsamixer or any sound app I get a message that says no sound device present.

So, if Alsa does not work, what else can I try?

There is OSS (Open Sound System). I use ALSA so I can't really help you with it, but a google should get you going.
