Is it possible to UPGRADE Mandriva 2006 to 2007 using the Mandriva One 2007 livecd?
I figured that I probably don`t require anything but the core system. So would save downloading the 3 CD set or DVD.
I installed MDV2007 using KDE One CD, and you know what ?
- the installation process formatted / without asking me final confirmation.
- the installer didn't want to understand I had a /home disctinct partition meant to be used (if I should tell him to use that partition, it would have required to format it first), so it created /home as a subdir of /, that had to be fixed with the next reboots to point the real partition
In my case, that was no big deal, I had just before that manually formatted / anyway, that was what I wanted.
But what if I wanted an upgrade only
Now, are you reassured ?
You're not ?
Normal.
Backup your files and data, the dd command is for you
Maybe the powerpack versions might work another way, I don't know.
It won't have all the packages that are available with the full pack from 2006.0 free (4 cd's) on the ONE cd.
you should be able to upgrade some of the packages, but that won't mean the entire install is not broken after that.
Good luck.
PS. if you added the cd as an upgrade cd, then chose what you want, maybe libc and Kernel and maybe xorg, then that might be ok but there's still a lot missing.
I've gotta say, from my experience, it's always been better to just save your package list, back up your data onto indestructable media, blow away your current install, and install the newer version from fresh. And once you've got your new system up and running with networking, re-update your URPMI media, and re-load all your packages from the saved package list.
But also, I don't see a reason for doing a full OS upgrade: from the way I look at it, Linux is 100% upgradable - that's the magic of compiling from source. Use URPMI and RPM to uninstall old versions of software, and upgrade them by compiling. Obviously, it takes a bit longer than installing a pre-compiled package, but I've never really noticed - it's usually off, compiling in the background (that's what a tty and many instances of screen are for).
When we are speaking of Mandriva, you can also chose to upgrade your system using Cooker sources (from PLF) : your system will be totally up to date, at your own risk considering it will be the cutting development edge of Mandriva.
In fact the best thing would be to be able to add to a MDV2006 the official RPM sources for the 2007 distro, and voila, start a huge update... Someday, when I'm mad enough, i'll try that to see at what stage things will get screwed up
Distribution: Mandriva mostly, vector 5.1, tried many.Suse gone from HD because bad Novell/Zinblows agreement

in advanced partitions the dvd presents a final list with clickable to be formated or not list of partitions (including /home in the list as not being formated). But once you press ok, no final warning.
It understands /home being a separate partition
