the ethernet card modules aren't loaded automatically

i've ported my system from one disk partition to another, and then
I've found out that the ethernet card drivers are no more
loaded automatically. i'm having to modprobe them
manually. after i do
modprobe sk98lin
modprobe 8139too

everything is okay, and there is no problem with the network
configuration.

what might be going wrong here and how do I fix this?

/etc/modprobe.conf:

This may work on it's own, but you may also need to put the module names in /etc/modprobe.preload - one per line.

thank you for the suggestion. the problem suddenly went away when i up'd my kernel. i still don't understand how it came to be.
