Chances are, you're using KDE, since that error message only occurs when aRTs (KDE's sound system) doesn't initialize properly. aRTs is not strictly necessary--other programs can simply bypass it. You can even disable it if you want, using the control center (just un-check "Enable the Sound System"). In fact, that might be best, since usually only KDE programs use aRTs, and aRTs can impede other programs from using the sound system.
