I am on a roll here getting this figured out, so I will keep bugging folks till I get the basic setup working :-)
Mandrake 10.
I set up the Network stuff during install, but for whatever reason, I cannot find KPPP on the menu system. I opened a console window and ran kppp from there. It opened as expected, I checked the settings and dialed my ISP.
It dialed, connected, and finished negotiating, and then it gave up and disconnected. The message on the console Or was it the log file) was that it could not find the ppp0 device.
I am confused as I do not know what it is trying to tell me. Since I haven't given much useful information, maybe someone can tell me what to look for, and what data I need to have in order to get this one working?
ok start with the basics what kind of modem do u have (onboard/internal/external) use the lspci command to see what devices ur machine detects. What type of connection are u using dial up/adsl/cable
I am not at the machine anymore for a while, so I can't run the Lspci It is an ActionTec, external serial modem on com1 so its obviously a dial up :-)
When I configured the network during install, it found it, and called it a generic modem on serial device1 (I forget the lingo, not be a pro yet <g>) When I dialed out, it did find the modem and connected to the ISP. It was then that it tried to negotiate with the ISP end, and then quits saying no ppp0 device exists.

it would seem that the modem is recognised by linux but its late here and will get back to u tomorrow
The help is appreciated. I checked, and it said to do what we did.
Its not my machine, so I can't wrestle with it till my friend gets back to it. It sure does recognize the modem, it dials it and negotiates for the connection, and then, just about when you might expect the connection to be made, it quits saying there is no ppp0 device, so I was hoping that might trigger someone's thought process, as its not much to go on, but its all I have right now.
