When booting kernel 2.6.17.14 and attempting to configure the wireless I get the following:
"Some packages (madwifi) are required but aren't available. These packages can be found in Mandriva Club or in Mandriva commercial releases.
The following component is missing: ath_pci
The required files can also be installed from this URL:
http://madwifi.org/"
madwifi-source-0.9.3-1.1mdv2007.1.noarch is installed
madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv is installed, but can't find a similar package for madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-14mdv.
I checked on the mirrors, and there is no such package, so I have submitted a bug report for this issue Missing madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-14mdv to Mandriva's bugzilla:
Quote:
Bug 30916 Submitted
The madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv-0.9.2-1mdk.i586 package exists for
-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv, but no similar package exists for kernel-2.6.17-14mdv
I added this additional information
Quote:
I failed to mention that the madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv-0.9.2-1mdk.i586
package does exist in the non-free media source, but no
madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-14mdv package is to be found in any of the non-free,
non-free_updates, plf-free, or the plf-non-free media sources.

that's normal...dkms-madwifi handles updated kernels.
I should have caught this myself. I saw this package on the mirror when I checked earlier, but I did not make the connection. Do you have the dkms-madwifi-0.9.2-1mdv2007.0.i586 package installed? If not, install it and any dependencies the Software Installer requests. That should make things work with the new kernel, and any future kernel upgrades.
Well, this message was actually on behalf of my roommate. He just reinstalled 2007.1. He was trying to follow a suggestion by A. Williamson (http://forum.club.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=66230) which didn't work. He had to reininstall to get a working system.
I usually play hell trying to get him to update his sytem since his point is that "Everything is working well, why should I take the risk." I guess it will be harder now. He doesn't want to take the risk of having to reinstall the system again if your suggestion should not work.
Wish I had gotten your response before I got the other one. It might have worked, and then been less hard to talk my roomie into doing updates in the future. Sigh......
By the way, tried a urpmi of dkms-madwifi-0.9.2-1mdv2007.0.i586 and get a "no package found" type of message.
Update: I did find it in cooker, but he isn't going to install anything from there.
That package is available in the non-free media source (one of the Mandriva Linux Internet Software Repositories). If the package is not found, the most likely reason is that you have not configured your Software Package Manager to use the Internet Software Media Sources. This configuration will make the full range of software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux available for installation using your Mandriva Linux Software Package Manager. I have written an article on my LQ Blog to help others better understand this configuration.
There is an additional media source you did not include:
Code:
/official/2007.1/i586/media/non-free/release
To set this one up, you will use the following command as root in a terminal window (Edit: I have broken the URL into two lines to better fit the WEB page)
Code:
urpmi.addmedia non-free ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux
/official /2007.1/i586/media/non-free/release with media_info/hdlist.cz
This is the media source that contains the dkms-madwifi package you need.
I received additional response on the bug report for the missing kernel module:

No, it's not normal, we should issue dkms binaries updates together with the
kernel updates.
Other reports have been attached to this one so it seems this is a larger issue. This was not the only dkms binary update that was not issued for the new kernel.
