I am still kinda new to linux but I have a 2005le install that is working pretty well.(once I finally learned how to change permissions/install java,qt,etc)
I have d/l and burned the 2006 install disks.
Has anyone gone from 2005le to 2006?Am I going to notice a big difference?
I guess what I'm trying to ask is it worth the upgrade?
What I mostly do is surf, use open office a little and collect gifs, pics, wallpapers, and of course bug you guys at linuxquestions
If you can do everything you want to do in 2005 LE then I would stay with it. There is no point upgrading for the sake of it ---- unless you want to tinker. I have just spent most of my free time over the last week doing exactly what you want to do -- upgrade from 2005 to 2006. While the upgrade went well, I started to dislike Mandriva 2006 and it started to dislike me. We had a chat and decided it was time to call it a day. If I had stayed with 2005, I would still have a functioning system. I now have several cd-roms in front of me and decisions to make. Do you have time to mess around like this?? I don't.
I'm a sucker for the newest thing, but I upgraded from 2005 LE to 2006 on my Dell laptop, and the difference was quite noticeable. 2006 runs quite a bit zippier, even with KDE, on my computer now, and it features newer versions of just about every piece of software from 2005 LE (the exception being OpenOffice, which I uninstalled and installed 2.0). The newer version of KDE is a bit more aesthetically pleasing as well (at least to me). I think it's worth the upgrade, but that's really up to you and your personal preference, and what you want to do with your computer.
Oh, and if you do upgrade, install 2006 from scratch (i.e., don't choose the "upgrade" installation, just choose "install", and install it over 2005 LE). Otherwise, you'll probably run into dependency problems, broken links, and all kinds of other issues.
I'd say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is nothing "better enough" in the new version to do an upgrade unless there is something in 2005le that you aren't happy with. My 2005le install had become extremely unstable and crashed more than anything I've dealt with since Windows 98. I decided to wait the extra few weeks for 2006 to come out before reinstalling and I'm quite happy with the upgrade, but if my 2005le install had been working right, there aren't enough new things available to where it would have been worth the week or so of tinkering to get everything right again.
Thats what I've been thinking.I just built a new system and took the hd from my old box which has a 3 month old install of 2005le thats doing fine. Now that I finally got everything tweaked and installed I'd hate to have to do that again.I just started using linux 4 months ago.2005 even had the correct drivers for my new systems nvidia sound and video
chipset
I had to use the generic nvidia sound drivers for my old mobo's chipset. That sucked.
I do have this nagging crash alert every time I close kaffeine?Kaffeine works fine in every way then when I close the program I get a kde crash alert that doesnt seem to do anything?
I can re-open kaffeine and play whatever and alls well then when I close it ..crash alert.
I installed gdb so I can backtrace the crash but its all greek to me.(no offense intended).
If I uninstall kaffeine and re-install do you think that will take care of the problem?
Sometimes certain hardware/software setups just cause weird bugs every once in awhile. If you reinstalled kaffeine it might help, but if you've always had this problem with kaffeine, there's no guarantee. Have you tried updating? It's possible it was a bug that's been fixed in the updates. Also, it could just be weird issues with audio or video drivers with some weird package that you'll never be able to track down. If it's not too annoying, it's probably something you could live with. You could also try mplayer with a good front end and see if you like that better. Functionally, they're about the same.
If you're willing to risk it, you could try uninstalling it and then installing a newer version of kaffeine... either from cooker or from the Mandriva 2006 release. It's very possible it could break things or require a whole bunch of dependencies that you don't have, but I've done it before when I had a program that had a bug that I didn't want to deal with.
i would upgrade again from 2005 le to 2006 free just to get rid of the the stary eyed drunk looking penguin...
2006 is definitely aesthetically more pleasing.. but i must confess that i broke alsa along the way.... somewhere.... and now alsa cant handle outputs from more than one program... something that used to work in 2005 and 2006 when i just installed it... oh and the master volume control doesnt work... well thats why i'm paying you guys a visit in the first place... check out my thread and help me out if u know how...
on the whole i like 2006 better... especially after i compiled my own kernel... making use of AMD powernow technology... and now the loudest thing about my laptop are the touchpad buttons! sweeet..
I recently upgraded 2005LE to 2006 and am glad I did, a few nags that needed sorting out but some good gains :-
It looks nicer, fonts much improved, it boots much faster.
One of the unexpected suprises was FPS in games, the game Armagetron jumped from 30fps to 60 fps! not sure why, I have the identical Nvidia driver installed.
Improvements to Kontact
If you have your linux installed on 3 partitions, eg root, home and swap then there is nothing to lose by upgrading and if going wrong as it`s really simple, you only need backup your home partition, I used `partimage` to make an image of root partition of 2005LE before upgrading to 2006.
Problems I had with 2006 :-
XMMS would not load, fixed by removing and re-installing.
Kasbar has had a radical makover that I didnt like, so swapped it for the standard kde taskbar.
Had to reinstall Nvidia driver, but 2006 detected it was not working and automatically removed `vividia` and replaced it with `nv` in ect/x11/xf86config, which was quite cool. Re-installing the driver fixed problem then all I needed to do was re-edit xf86config.
I had no sound, but found it was simply deactivated, so just turned it back on in kde prefs.
it`s also great learning experience migrating from version to version and dealing with any probs that arise.
This is Linux, we like to get our hands dirty! Upgrade!
