There is certain software that I want to install that isn't in the repo, one example is geany. Another is Filezilla There are a lot of other things that I would expect to be in the repo. Is there any good repos I can add that would have a lot more software than the default?

Reason: forgot something
Add full set of Mandriva repos:
# urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist '$MIRRORLIST'
Make sure you enable non-free manually in media manager.
Add full PLF repos (nice multimedia on other stuff):
# urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/$RELEASE.$ARCH.list'
If you need an app that is not in any repo, compile it yourself, but use checkinstall to create an RPM file so you can maintain it with rpm/urpmi. Not all apps will work with checkinstall, however.
Once you are up to speed on creating RPM files, you might want to volunteer to maintain that special package for the contribs repo.
