What file system did you use for Mandriva? EXT3 is the default, but you can change that.
I would assume that Norton System Works is a windoze application, and you ran it after booting windoze. Windoze can not ( and I'm greatful for this ) read or write most file systems linux uses. Windoze can read and write a fat32 partition, but you can't install linux to a fat32 partition. So, with that said, I very much dought your Mandriva installation is either backup, or destroyed.
My best guess from what you have said is, the boot loader on the MBR has been messed with. You can re-install just the boot loader to the MBR by booting Mandriva disk 1. It has been a while since I did this, you have to go to a prompt. There is an option to re-create the MBR.
Let us know if you can not find it. I'll dig out my install CD's and figure out how and post.
It might be helpful if you booted yor mandriva cd, start teh install and go as far as the point where you can display the partitions on the hard drive. Could you post that data? Linux will be on hdax where x is a number, it is not on your "D:" drive.
