I'm running 2010. I've got a Gig of RAM. RAM usage with FF, OOo & GIMP open is < 500 MB. I've got 5 plasma widgets on desktop. Swap is totally untouched.
Try running 'top' to see what's eating up all your RAM.
well this screenshot doesn't show nothing unusual... use the commands that i've wrote in my previous post and make a screenshot of the Ressources tab in the system monitor.
please copy paste the result anyway the screenshot is just for curiosity... the commands are more important than screenshots!
anyway if you don't want do paste the info, i would suggest to reinstall your system or upgrade.... In my 7 years of linux experience i never used more than 10% of the swap.
PS: oh do you have an onboard GFX card? that might explain the use of the swap as you only have 1 GB of RAM, right?

gfx card is graphics card! this is odd you on that output it shows that you don't use all of RAM... i can't figure out why your system use the swap memory.
I am using Mandriva 2007,so i still haven,t used neither of Mandriva 2009/2010,but studying your posts and, answers,i can conclude that There is no problem with your Mandriva 2010,but most possibly it,s related to your hard ware.....
Let,s open the problem:
-Usually newer versions are more complicated ,and more equipped(enhanced),so, do more, and as a result of that, use more (memory.....etc)
-As you said, your computers' RAM is 512 Meg,which is not enough(even if you do not notice any problems),so increase the RAM capacity as much as you can !
-To be sure about your software source, just use another(DVD) Mandriva 2010.
