Mandriva Linux 2009.1 *Spring) released to the public today

Mandriva Linux 2009.1 (Spring) was released to the public today (29, April 2009), and my first impressions are favorable here. Installation on an AMD Athlon x2 (x86_64) system came off without a hitch. 2009.1 feels significantly more stable than 2009.0 (which I found to be at least adequate). It seems to load and shut down faster than previous releases. The installer looks and feels the same as (or similar to) what I used when installing previous releases, so any one who has installed MDV in the recent past will feel right at home with the new installation routine.

Note: Remember to complete your configuration in the Summary screen. You can configure (customize) each of the items listed there to best meet your needs.

Disclaimer: I had the unofficial KDE-4.2.2 repositories set up for MDV-2009.0 here before installing 2009.1, and I found that renaming my ~/.kde4 directory to ~/.kde4.bak (thus starting with a fresh configuration) got things off to a better start when I installed KDE4 under MDV-2009.0. This step may or may not make any improvement for others when installing MDV-2009.1, but it may be helpful to those who choose to continue using MDV-2009.0 with KDE-4.2.2 (and have problema with keeping configuration changes).

The part I still eagerly await is the plf repo's for 2009.1

What is the best route to take if I have mdv-RC2 installed? Should I do an upgrade to get the final version?

IMO, I would upgrade the base system first, the kernel and tools and hardware modules etc(like proprietary graphics). And mandriva-release-common...packages(states version info for urpmi and rpm)

I am working slowly towards it, using urpmi and smart. Incremental upgrade.

Then I would upgrade the main window-manager (kde, xfce4 or whatever)

It's always fraught with danger, Backup first!

After setting that up, I would upgrade the other servers and services and programs.

I installed mdv-2009.1 from an ftp mirror on the Internet, so I simply edited my Software Media Sources to point to the official sources rather than the ones in devel. When I read the Mandriva Linux 2009.1 release information here I saw that with the release of rc2, users can upgrade online using the MDK Online applet. Since I had performed the same operation manually (the hard way) I decided to edit the URL's using the Mandriva Media Source Manager (MCC > Software Management > Configure Media Sources for Install and Upgrade). This was much easier and worked well for me here.

my mandriva2009.0 was showing a blue download icon on the bottom right; I clicked on it and it took less than 2 hours for this 1-click upgrade to Release 2009.1 (pauillac), Kernel linux 2.6.29.1-desktop-4mnb, Gnome 2.26.1

the only thing that seemed weird after the upgrade was the pulseaudio giving choppy sound. I simply reselected the sound on VLC / Audacious and its been great and seems to be much much much more stable than 2009.0

the other thing that stopped working was AMSN; but i went ahead and re-downloaded msn and its been working great

I have a question though - I never use KDE (I'm a solid Gnome fan), can i uninstall kde ? or should i leave it alone ?

Personally, I prefer KDE, but you can use the Desktop Environment of your choice. Unless disk space is an issue, you can have both DE's (Gnome and KDE) installed, and use the one you want. On a default Mandriva installation some components from the Gnome Desktop Environment are installed, and (If I Understand Correctly) the same may be true when the Gnome Desktop Environment is used. Since you had the One Click Upgrade Functionality available to you, I assume that you have your Internet Media Sources properly configured, so ther should be no problem installing Gnome, simply start by installing the task-gnome package with the Mandriva Package Manager of your choice (rpmdrake, urpmi, or smart are a few that come to mind).

Hi,
I too decided to use the blue update icon to give it a try..Usually i do a fresh install but this time i decided "what the Heck"...Like logicmaster above,I waited a couple of hours (broadband)but eventually it finished..
I had to do some minor tweaks but everything seems to work and also seems more stable too..
I also downloaded mandriva one that I will be installing on another hard drive later..
Mandriva clearly is becoming my favorite...Great job developers!!!..

yeap yeap.. Mandriva is clearly my current choice and favorite

I've been using this since December 2008.

Other linux that I'd used for a long time before Mandriva:
* PCLinuxOS
* ELIVE englightenment
* BLAG (blagblagblag.org)
* Kanotix

Of course I've tried many many other distros just to play with them for few hours or couple of days max.

What about you guys ? what are some of the linux distros that you'ved used for a long time ?

this simple step breaks drakconf...When you add the new repos and open drakconf's rpmdrake

these are part of the required packages "Before you (do anything more)"

After a few times through an upgrade, I found that if this is left out (near immpossible "deps")...

Drakconf still works with the older 2009.0 version re-installed

the screen just forms shadows when a window screen is moved. why? how to correct it?

(Eg: opened OpenOffice-Writer. If the window is moved, it doesn,t move smooth. it forms shadows. display settings set are right for the monitor -Dell E1909 W 1440x600)

please help

Hi kareth, what you see, I hope, is a desktop effect.

What happens when you release the window from the mouse?

Does it return to full capacity, non-transparent?

You should start a new thread with your problem, to get the exposure it deserves.

In your new thread, please state what os you are using, what distribution and some details about your hardware. (I only use dells at university)
