Mandrakelinux 10.1 on IBM ThinkPad 770E

Hello,

I'm trying to put my old ThinkPad 770E to some use, and for that purpose I've installed Mandrakelinux 10.1 on it. The only real problem I have is sound, or the lack of thereof. It seems that Mandrakelinux 10.1 doesn't recognize the sound card. I've done some digging, and I've found out that the 770E uses cs4232 sound chip. I've also stumbled upon the Linux on laptops.com website (sorry, no link; the system doesn't allow me to post it).

I tried the described suggestion; I opened the /etc/modules.conf file (which is, by the way, empty) in Kwrite, added the following lines:

Code:
alias sound-slot-0 cs4232

options sound dmabuf=1

alias synth0 opl3

options opl3 io=0x388

options cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5

dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5
I then restarted the machine, but still no sound. I'm lost, and I'd appreciate any help (please keep im mind that I'm a newbie :-)

Thank you!

Kind regards,
Dmitri

Have you tried changing the volume level?
(Note this is not sarcastic but has happened more than once on my systems)

Are you using alsa?
Are you using KDE / Gnome?

Any error info would be helpful too....

I've learnt the hard way ....
dont edit conf files with KWrite
use a proper text editor
I've gotten away with using Kwrite sometimes
but I really managed to stuff XFree86 up
using Kwrite
and had to fix with vi

so take my advice use a text editor
floppy
