Question Mandrake 9.2rc2 Partitioning Question

I'm running Knoppix-STD 0.1b live CD, might I say is a great distro for beginners like myself, but I feel its a hassle when trying to save configuration files and keeping a persistent home directory on my hard drive..being that I have to set the conditions on every boot up.

So I've burned the 3 ISO files for Mandrake 9.2rc2. Along with
Mandrake-MNF(Multi-Network Firewall).

The only thing that has held me back from doing this before, is the fact that my sad excuse for a "computer" has only a sad 4 Gig hard drive, and a sad 60-64Mb of RAM .. which is what lead me to a CD-bootable distro in the first place.

My question here is, do you think Mandrake will partition my hard drive good enough to have a dual boot with such minimal space?????????? I see there is a "Mount a Disc Image" option in
'Nero CD ROM Burner', where you can mount a disc image file (ISO) to your hard drive, and access it like a real drive.

Could this be a worthwhile option for users like myself who don't have the resources for more disk space, and not much room on their hard drives??? Or should I be ok with installing Mandrake?

If it were up to me, I would just trash Winblowz, but my mother won't agree..(traitor)

I don't use more than 1 gig of space on Windowz as it is so, should I try this?... Thanks for all replies...

Mounting the ISO from Nero wouldn't work, because you have to do that from windows, it would be inaccessible before windows loaded. Besides, if you have room for the isos on your hard drive, you can have at least a minimal install.

I have 9.2rc2 running on a 4.3 gig hard drive. Granted, it is the secondary hard drive and windows is on a 20gig, but the 4gig has a decent amount of space left, and you could probably get by with less applications than I have.

Also, Mandrake will likely be easier on your ram than knoppix since knoppix uses a ramdisk(i think?), but you should upgrade it anyway. Ram is dirt cheap these days.

I would recommend giving it a shot, but back up the drive so mother's windows don't get blown away.

Alright then, thank you for the insight Alec, this truly eases my fears. I've defragged my hard drive and am going to attempt to back up Windows with Nero. Once again thank you.
