Unhappy Mandrake 9.2 problems with laptop!!!!! Please help me!!!!!

Hi, I try to install mandrake 9.2 on my hp pavillion ze4336ea. After istalling, mandrake refuse to start with acpi. It start only if I use acpi=off in kernel options. But after 5 min. the processor goes up to 78°!!!!!!!!!
I have an Athlon XP-m 2200+ and i've tried to rebuild kernel using powernow options and acpi configured, but it refuse to start.
Anyone knows how to resolve this probem? Tnx!

Same boat

I'm pretty much in the same boat with you on an Emachines m5310. I've posted a couple of times asking for help but haven't gotten much. Maybe some of these guys will take pity on you and help you out. Here is my experience...

I'm using Mandrake 9.2 RC2. I've downloaded the Mandrake kernel 2.4.xx source (If you haven't already compile using their source kernel's I've had better luck because it is preconfigured for all of their stuff) and configured it for ACPI / Athlon / Powernow. ACPI reports battery status and does work with closing the lid and power button. It does not work with what is called "performance managment" which is the CPU throttling that will slow down the processor to say 600mhz. The AMD boys where kind enough to provide several different speeds between Min and Max operating frequencies. The intel guys are stock with just a max and min operating speed.

I've tried getting CPUfreq to throttle the processor to no avail. For some reason Linux just isn't picking up on the fact that this is a mobile processor.

Bottom line is my laptop also runs hotter then hell when plugged in but actually runs fairly cool (although not as cool as windows) when unplugged. Which is curious because according to the proc/cpuinfo it is still operating at 1800mhz so I'm not quite sure what is actually causing it to run cooler.

Finally since it seems like I really haven't answered your question, try reading your log files when you were trying to boot with ACPI. Find out the last thing it booted on and work backwards from there. Perhaps check your bios and make sure that APM is not enabled in anyway. Just remember the 2.6 kernel is just around the corner and this should have much better support for ACPI then the 2.4 kernel.

If you figure anything out please share the knowledge

After untarring the kernel sources you must update the acpi code with the latest from acpi.sf.net. Then re config, recompile. The instructions should be on the ACPI website on Sourceforge.

Cheers

back up !!!!!!!

9.2 is just not ready for you yet. if you were a techie genius on mandrake linux maybe but not the average newbie.

9.1 is what you are looking for. as i write this, i'm fine tuning my band new 9.1 installation onto my laptop which previously carried 9.0 and would have kept it on there had i not made a minor partition mistake that suggested it was just was well i put a fresh 9.1 install instead of trying to repair it.

drastic? normally yes, but because i was wise/lucky enough to have everything archived from my daily/weekly backup it wasn't a big deal

however, did i ever wish i had of installed 9.1 sooner....! wow, 9.0 was great but 9.1 on my laptop is unbelieveable

i've posted another thread talking about my experience 'mandrake 9.0 to mandrake 9.1' for more on my experince

my suggestion, 9.1 is the experience you are looking for right now. and incidentally about that fan, 9.1 seems to be boot, run and shutdown, ALL without ever activating any fan or overheating anything. i got my hand on the keyboard and it is as "cool" as anything else.

try it, you'll love it.

and 9.2, give it 6 months, it'll be ready then

one more thing,

when i was setting up my partitions this time, i made use of more than just the default journalizing ext3 available when setting up /tmp and /var/www. ext3, according to one study, kicks ass in many ways however it also journalises which means that it tries to recover from system crashs by writing all your file/memory changes to disk every 5 seconds. sounds like a great idea and it works great. ever notice how getting back into linux after a crash (mind you my linux hardly ever crashes but it has no defense against a power outage) seems like a piece of cake in comparison to the earlier days with windoze?

however, on the /tmp and /var/www partitions, it's not a good idea to ext3/journalize those as the /tmp is optionally deleted at boot anyway and the same goes for /var/www. further, why would you want to journalize *.tmp files or internet cache files? by doing so, your causing your processor to work needlessly overtime which in turn causes the temperature to rise, not to mention steal previous processor time.

so use ext2 (native) for /tmp and /var/www as a countermeasure to your system heating up.

anyone what to counter me that, your comments would be greatly appreciated

cheers

Tnx a lot everyone for the help. I'll try to download acpi patch and recompile kernel.
Just 2 things:
1) I spent all last summer trying to install Mandrake 9.1 on the same computer, and after a lot of kernels (different versions of mdk kernel, original kernel with pachs,....) i think that there is an incompatibility with mdk kernel and acpi of this kind of laptops (in fact it don't support apm but only acpi!). Perhaps a standard kernel on mdk create a lots of problems. (I think I'm really unluky...) So, also in MDK 9.2 there is the same bug, and I think that I'll spent next weekend to install gentoo....

2. If I patch the mdk kerel with acpi patch, it don't generate errors? (And I think I'm really a newbie...)

:-((((
If anyone knows which version of linux offer a good support for AMD PowerNow! and don't transform my laptop in a grill, please tell me!!!
Many tnx to all, and I'm sorry for my english level! :-)

In case others read this, they are talking about reiserfs a journalised file system and not how some have spelt it here.

IT RUNS!!!!!
I've read mandrake errata (tnx hulkt!!!!!!!!!!!!!) ad I've recompiled the kernel (the 2.4.22-21mdk) correctly. Now the notebook starts with linux, give me info on battery, voltage, etc... but don't support powernow :-(.
It does'nt matter, now i can use linux!
I wish that in kernel 2.6 processor states and amd powernow will be supported; we'll see.
Tnx a lot to all!

thanks for the update, i too have problems with acpi, i was thinking about disabling it considering my laptop battery is basically dead anyway.

but....

it's interesting as i've never recompiled the kernal before.

what's involved with that?

- perry
ps.
running mandrake 9.1 with 2.4.21-0.13mdk

Mandrake makes it nice...on mandrakeusers.org there is a doc to help.

The basic steps are easy

this is the link:

http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/install/kupgrade3.html

it should get you started...with any questions you have posted here
