how do i get into linux, the part of linux that i can do stuff, like in windows? thanks in advance
I've seen some other posts on Mandriva not starting up in the GUI (AKA windows). during installation, were there any steps or error messages relating to your monitor and video card?
Immediate things to try include "startx" or "init 5". These commands get entered at the prompt that you described. (If you are interested, this is called the "command line".)
If none of this helps, do some searches here.
ok. it said that "a mandatory file, mandi-ifw, is missing" is it a bad copy of the OS?
It appears that this file has to do with internet security (iptables) Very unlikely that it would keep you from getting to the GUI. The key to all this is likely in the configuration file for X-Windows. It may take some digging, which is not a pleasant task for a Newbie just starting out.
You might want to try something well-proven like Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Mepis.
Also, tell us about your hardware--esp video card and monitor.
You really need to post detailed error messages. What happens when you try to do "startx" or "init 5". If the installer says that there are files missing, then it could be that your installation media or the iso you downloaded is corrupt. Check the md5sums of the iso with the ones posted on the Mandriva site. If they don't match, then download the iso again. If they match, burn the iso at a very low speed.
