Does anyone know how to make Konqueror browser able to open pages with java applets, for example like Yahoo Chess pages?

Just go into the Java - Javascript icon in the Konqueror configuration pages and select "enable Java / Javascript globally".

Unfortunately the above link does things the hard way, so to speak.
A much easier alternative if you do not have the java rpm's installed is to avail yourself of the urpmi command.
urpmi nameofmissing_javarpm

If you've installed the Java Plugins, all you should need to do is enable Java globally and scan for new plugins.
Remember though that you may also have to reload the DM.

ok, under Settings-->Configure Konqueror-->Java and Java Scripts I select the path to Java directory witih plugin files. Apply, OK
and nothing happens. Konqueror is one of the worst web browsers, very user-unfriendly, does not even have Pop-ups control.
I guess the only option is Mozilla

Try what opjose said.
Go to Tools>>Configure Konqueror>>Plugins. Then click on the scan for new plugins button.

Here are the steps I went through:
1) download and istall java from www.java.com
the directory is /usr/java/j2....
2) Go to Configure Konqueror --> Java and Java Script --> Enbale Java Globally is checked, then I update plugins and pages with Java applets still don't work. Good thing I have a dual boot system with WinXP...
I like Mandrake a lot, but I hate to say it, being "crippled" in certain applications under Linux (including terrible Wi-Fi support) makes it really hard to get away from Windoze. May be I am just venting my frustration after hours of screwing around with this and pissing off my wife by getting consumed with "fixing little things" in Linux...

activating java in Konq
The other thing to note is that you have to tell Konquerer exactly where you java executable is located. Using the latest release of java mine points to -
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/bin/java

I will try this one. Sounds promising...
...I see opjose edited his previous post about some shortcomings in Linux...
I do not mean to bahs Linux btw, this is my second installation after I tired Red Had 9.0, and I have a lot of patience. Just wish I knew more about it or had someone 'live' who could show me some tricks...

I haven't had much luck getting the java-vm to work with Mozilla either. Yep, I've installed Sun's java, made the symbolic link, etc but still no java support. It's the main thing keeping windows running on my wife's pc, she only uses Linux for everything else.

Could it be that the logged in user has insufficient rights to the java files?
Have you tried chmod'ing the files?
