Kernel Ooops with Nvidia Drivers on Mandriva LE 2005

Hello!
I've a problem that's drive me crazy...
I've upgrade my linux OS from Mandrake 10.0 to Mandriva LE 2005 (10.2), the instalation went just fine, but the nightmare started at the moment I tried to install the NVidia driver.
Let me tell you that I've installed the drivers flawlessly, with the command sh NVIDIA-blablabla.sh as root, It compiled well against my kernel and it installed perfectly, the nightmare begun after the mandatory change in xorg.conf from Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia" and the subsequent reboot.
Apparently it makes my kernel to core dump.
The symptom is when it try to start X (with the "nvidia" driver) it goes completely black, except a "_" fixed cursor on the top left corner of the screen.
I can't control that PC with the keyboard anymore, but I can access it via ssh.
let's see my configuration:

it's a Intel P3 (katmai) 450 Mhz, with 256 Mb RAM
Two HDD, really old ones 6 and 8 Gb each
where the boot one is a Seagate 6Gb with a mini 500 Mb partition with Win 98 =) and the rest an ext3 partition and a swap for linux, the other disk is the "storage" (ext3) mounted as "disco2" on mnt/ and it could be removed without any impact on the system.
The video card: MSI GeForce 4 MX 440 VIVO with 2 connectors to CRT type monitors. And yes, previously I used it (on the mandrake 10.0) with a dual head configuration via TwinView and it worked extremely well.
I've also on that machine an ISA Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold, a Pixelview TV card (old chipset), and a Creative Web Cam III usb.
It all worked fine prior the update, now I'm trying to solve the video first and then I'll try to get the other hardware run again.

So, the antecedent is: it worked before.

Now:
What I've tried was:
1. To edit the /etc/modprobe.preload file by adding the line: "nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=0" No success
2. Option "IgnoreEDID" "1" No success
3. Option "NVAGP" "1" / "2" / "3" No success (I'm not ready to try "0", I'm looking for better ideas yet)
4. Downgrade the driver from 7667 to 7664, with identical Ooopses, No success
5. Upgrade my kernel from 2.6.11-6 to 2.6.11-12 and then reinstall the driver/s No success
6. Reinstall the entire system ->nope!

So I used about 20 hours and now I've no ideas left.
I did search for similar problems in this forum and at the Nvidia forums too, but none of them reflected my specific issue, but I'm tried the solutions (see the 6 point above).

About my system:

Mandriva Linux LE 2005 (10.2) with all the upgrades and Kernel 2.6.11-12 for i686 in spanish (it's my mother tongue, hence my terrible english, sorry for that

) and the correspondant Kernel sources.
The "nv" driver work just fine.
X11 server 6.8.2-7.1.102 fresh from the updates mirror

In all honesty, why don't you go back to Mandrake 10.0
I have had other problems with 10.1 & 10.2
so I've gone back to 10.0
was there a specific reason that you upgraded ?
what I have done is to install 10.0
used the MCC media manager to add the 10.1 DVD
and I pinched files I wanted from 10.1 to add to 10.0
mostly games and java that I didn't have on 10.0

Well I've 3 machines, a P2, P3 (the one with the problem) and a P4, (still with mandrake 10.0).

I've started the upgrade wave because the P2 (the gateway/firewall/proxyserver/telephone answering machine) was terribly outdated (mandrake 8.0) and I wasn't able to do the necesary security updates anymore.
So, in the past I did the updates flawlessly (well, not exactly updates, but reinstalations), in fact the installation of the P2 (with the newest NVIDIA drivers AND the same kernel) worked perfeclty well
That's why I've started to update the second one.

the difference between both computers beyond the processor is that one has a GeForce4 MX 440 and the other the same board with VIVO and a second monitor (CRT, not DVI) out.

anyway, if it worked in one pc with almost the exact graphic board I didn't suspected it could bring me trouble with the other (and I don't mention the sound problem.... yet

)

This kind of problems are the ones that makes me learn, and achieve wisdom trough knowlegde. So in spite the frustration I'm enjoying the experience =)

Well, I've downloaded the NVIDIA-blahblehblih.sh from the NVidia site, and yes, I've the sources installed.

I've also checked the NVidia site, where I posted a similar cry for help too.
There, a person recommended me to install a Kernel multimedia made by a guy called Thac. At this point and because that poor computer is a test bank I did it.
It installed ok, so after that I installed the NVidia drivers, which compiled against the new kernel (and new sources) flawlessly, but at the moment I tried to start X, it exit with an error.

it says:

It appears to X is trying to load a module builded for the older kernel!!, but I've checked the log and the compilation was against the correct kernel source, so I don't know wich file I've to edit to point X11 to the right module.

The good news is: there was no kernel oops. So, perhaps, it's a matter of this particular brach of kernels against the NVidia driver...

What you've probably heard was that there's a similar problem with the kernel for 64 bits processors. It appear that those people have a system crash when they try to use the 7xxx drivers of NVidia.

Nah sorry that stuff is way over my head
I only know a little and thats because I recently bought a FX 5200
and had to download the drivers
I'm still reading all the Read-me's and how-to's
so I dont stuff it up

If I were in your position I would have taken the easy way out
and re-installed Mandrake 10.0 LOL

Never mind, Floppy, I've managed to do it.
But, still the same problem
And I beginning to suspect a hardware problem
After all, as I told you before, I did successfully installed LE2005+NVidia drivers+everything else in a similar PC, not only this time, I'm with Mandrake and NVidia since 8.0, and I know what kind of problems can arise and I never found this kind of problems.
So the last bastion, the ultimate solution will be to replace the board (and it hurt my pocket, but I can't afford not to have that PC operational)
So, I'll post any news for the others if I manage to resolve this problem.
I'm very grateful for your effort to aid me in this predicament.

I have just installed LE2005 and I am having the same problem as you - my box is an AMD 2.6 /Asus with generic card. Everything worked fine with 10.1

Interestingly (or desperately?!

) There are asm/compiling warnings issued through the compilatino process.

Grrrrrr - I hate it when there is no obvious scientific reasoning - but v7667 now works for me.....

I downloaded and installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run -> everything worked OK

I downloaded and installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7664-pkg1.run on top, -> everything worked OK

I then thought I was on a roll,

I downloaded and installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7667-pkg1.run -> and then everything worked OK !!

Aside from going through that process, I also slipped in 'nolapic' as a kernel parameter in /etc/lilo.conf (and of course ran /sbin/lilo -v after the edit)

Ok, let me tell you what didn't worked (check the antecedent messages for details of the problem):

1. NVAGP 0, 1, 2, 3
2. Kernel Multimedia
3. IGNORE EIDE 1
4. Reinstall
5. Disconnect everything on the computer except the HDD and the video board.
6. Roll back to Mandrake 10.1
7. Light Candles and pray

What DID work and thank's to that I've the PC finally up and running (still without sound, but hey!! it's a big step forward):

Install an old driver:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run

I've replaced my board with a very old and reliable TNT, (Diamond Viper 550), and start to roll back the drivers to find one wich can recognize this legacy board AND work at the same time (yes, I was suspected about the hardware at this point) and BINGO! the 7174 worked just fine. with that antecedent I've installed again the GeForce 4...

Hi Big team (worldwide!)

I have a problem with my nvidia geforce4 mx460-vtp under linux. I installed many programs to make video capturing but no one found no one device related with capturing. I also tried to create this device by hand (as indicated by www.yolinux.com) but without sucess. Can Somebody drive me how to have sucess to capture video under linux? I had success with windows but I don't wish use windows only to it! I use linux 99% of my time!

I lost many nights trying it without success!!

I'm earing for some help...

Can you tell me if you are trying to capture video using the video IN feature of the NVidia boards?
Or it's another board/device (like firewire)?
