Is an option available in mdk 10.1 to boot using kernel 2.4. If so how to enable it.
Kernel 2.6 is better is automouting USB devices and is faster. However, some old programs downloaded from sites like freshmeat.net may not work in 2.4 unless updated.
I doubt you can install only the 2.4 kernel and not the 2.6. I believe that you can install the 2.4 kernel source, compile it, and run off of it, but 2.6 is installed and run to start out with.
