You can *always* create directories on top a unmounted directory like /mnt/cdrom or /mnt/floppy before mounting.
use the mount command line program to try mounting the cdrom and post the result. "man mount" for help =P
There is a file called fstab somewere .... i think /etc/fstab
Look into it to see if there is something wrong with the way it is mounting your cd.
Also, mandrake comes with an app to mount stuff. disk-something ... use it / look for it in the menu.
