Thats because you are not entering the commands as root. When discussing issues regarding Unix/Linux, if someone puts a "#" in front of a command, it means you have to be root and if its a "$" it means you have to be a normal user.

Thanks for trying to help me guys. I installed the 2007.1 DVD over the 2007 installation and all is well now, of course.

As root, you could also type

urpmi --auto-update
This works especially well if you boot right into the shell rather than opening one from the desktop (saves a step or two).

You might want to take a look at easy urpmi to make sure you've get the mirrors you need, too.
