I can't open .rpm files in Mandrake 8.2 ...also I have n o sound. (NEWBIE)

As far as the rpms go - you don't open them you run them. In a console (as root) type rpm -ivh <packagename>.rpm to install or rpm -Uvh <packagename>.rpm to upgrade.
To run as root:
type su
type the root password
To exit - type exit
Need more info on sound - hardware, error messages, etc
the problem with the sound is probably that it is just disabled. I had the same problem myslef and so has others. It is disabled by default i assume. Just start kmix and it will let you adjust whatever you need. Also, i have had a few problems with the start menu. What you will need to do is just right click on the start menu, then click on menu editor. Once menudrake opens just click on save. That will make sure all of the enteries that are supposed to be in there get in there. I guess this is a bug.
Wait, you said you installed 8.2, did you mean 9.2?
