I've only been using Linux for a couple weeks but I have a rather annoying problem. Using KDE 3.1 I am unable to change the icon for my CDROM drive (/mnt/cdrom). Its an IDE drive but Mandrake is using the SCSI emulation to run the drive so it shows up as /dev/scd0. When I Iright click on the drive on the desktop and choose 'properties' I dont have the option to change the icon, no matter who I am logged in as (including root). Anybody got an idea what is wrong?
But thats the problem, unlike any other icon, when I go into the proerties menu I cannot click on the icon to bring up the icon selection menu, it is locked.
Here's what I've tried, I logged in as root, unmounted the old drive, created a new drive using the same mount point as the old one, when I try to mount the drive I get the error: "cannot find file://"
I'm not sure what this means
I'm not sure what you have done. What I mean for you to try is to right click on the old CD mount icon, select properties, and then write down all of the properties in the properties screens. Close the properties screens.
Then right click on an empty space on the desktop. Click on Create New -> CD/DVD-ROM Device. Fill in the properties screen the same as the old properties screen except for the first page. On the first page give the icon a different name and select the new icon that you want.
Click on OK.
You should now have two icons on your desktop to mount CD-ROMs. Test the new one. If it works then delete the old one by right clicking on it and clicking on delete.
It seems this is a KDE problem, I logged in under GNOME and was able to change my icons just fine, I do have a workaround though, just created a shortcut directory to /mnt/cdrom. I guess it pretty much get the same job done, just wish I could figure out what is wrong.
I dunno if this will help , but i think the icon is dynamic , so basically kde calls for that icon , still you should be able to change it somewere , mm scanners are also dynamic as with cameras , i will try change them later when im home .
