CD icon appears on desktop when media inserted into cdrom

Hi All,

If I remember correctly in mandrake, when you insert a CD into your drive, an icon for your CD drive appears on your desktop automatically, and when you eject the CD, the icon disappears.

Can someone explain how this works? I'm trying to set up my Slackware machine to work the same way in KDE 3.2.2

I have supermount installed, and my fstab has these entries:

none /mnt/dvd supermount fs=auto,dev=/dev/dvd 0 0
none /mnt/cdwriter supermount fs=auto,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount fs=auto,dev=/dev/fd0,--,user,rw 0 0

With a console, I can browse to these folders and view the contents of the CDs I insert, and eject while in the dir no problem. I just can't get the CD's to appear on my desktop, which is my main goal.

In KDE you can right click desktop > configure Desktop > Device Icons and add a checkbox beside mounted DVD, floppy, CD Writer, CD Rom, as well as unmounted DVD Floppy CDWriter etc.

No matter what checks I put in, I can't seem to get the icons to appear.

I've found that if I change my /etc/fstab entries to this:

/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd supermount fs=auto,dev=/dev/dvd 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdwriter supermount fs=auto,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/dev/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=auto,dev=/dev/fd0,--,user,rw 0 0

that the icons appear. But they're on my desktop permanently, even if I uncheck "unmounted DVD" in the configure desktop options.

I'm stumped. Does anyone know how this works?

Thank you!

Murray

ps. please don't say "Install Mandrake" hehe.

in mandrake with KDE you run kcontrol and under look and feel click behavior then

there is a tab that says device icons and you have to click enable icons and click the box for which icons you want enabled
