How do I reconfigure my mouse pad.

I was using a wheel mouse on my laptop for a few days. When I plugged in the mouse and booted up I got a prompted me to configure it. I choose standard wheel mouse and clicked ok, no problem. The next time I booted it up after removing the wheel mouse, I was again Prompted again to reconfigure. I choose remove configuration for the wheel mouse and something else that I didnt pay too much attention to. Now when I boot up it doesnt prompt me to configure antthing even though the mouse pad is no longer working. So I tried ""XFree86 -configure" to create XF86Config.new which I was gonna use to replace the one I messed up but I got the following message: "Fatal server error: SERVER IS ALREADY Active for display 0. If this server is nolonger running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again." What should I try next?
