Since you in the Mandrake Forum I guess that your running Mandrake. If when you click on an icon and something happen really fast and then nothing happens open a shell and type in the name of the program. This will print out an error message to help you fix the problem. Now as to installing stuff. First go to the Penguin liberation front http://plf.zarb.org/ read how to set up your sources. This will give more software than you can imagine. Then go to K Start Menu>Configuration>Configure your Computer enter your root passwd. At the bottom left of the box select software and search on the required software and let the system install it for you. You'll get their just be patient. It almost impassable to hurt the hardware with software. So just play with your new os and lean all the fun thing you can do that you wish you could of done in Windows.
Once you've learned it you'll think its easy to use than windows. The monitor on my Dual boot XP/MDK9.2 machine just died. I bought a good used monitor and XP refused to change it. So it took a 1/2 hr to change a stupid monitor. But the MDK took less than a minute and didn't require 6 reboots trying to get it to change.
I just have to say, the biggest weakness is lack of unified support. It's great that there's people everywhere with really good forums and FAQs, but it's still a mountain of information. Thousands of forums to swim through to find info.
I think if Mandrake took a few more steps to make it even easier than winXP, especially just the installation/setup parts, alot more people will go for Mandrake and other easy to use Linuxes. It's almost perfect.
I've got 6 machine of my own and 7 people that I maintain their system for them. All with different hw. (scsi drives, Digital cameras, Ipods, Webcams, Fire-wire and even 1 tablet) I'll tell this much Mandrake Linux is 100 Times easier to load than XP on all but 3. The last 3 Mandrake is still easier to load and set than any M$ product. Not to mention all the reboots. So saying that Xp is easier to load than Mandrake Linux well than you need more experience with all types of hardware. before you can make a statement like that. Just try going from a 19Inch monitor to a 17 on XP good luck.
