Question How do i install my mandriva dvd iso on a dell 5100

hey guys never had to use a forum before (just sat there annoyed with XP) but i finally got me a linux dvd iso (Mandriva-Linux-Free-2006-DVD.i586) to be exact but i burnt it to a disc with alcohol 120% and burnt fine as far as i know. i have a spare partition (20GB) tried to boot of the cd to install but just says "device not ready" but i have booted of this drive heaps with XP. so i tried to browse the cd for help files but windows dont read the cd ??? please help or just give me a link ive been looking for ages.

Did you burn the ISO as an image, or did you burn the iso. In Nero choose "recorder"--> "burn image" to burn the iso correctly. Did you burn the iso at high speed? Try burn at lower burnspeed. Try to burn on a different media etc.

It is all in how you burned the DVD, and if the downloaded ISO image is good to begine with.

Have a look at this link, http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO

you will see a tutorial on how to do a md5sum check on the iso download. That will verify if the image is good or not. Next look at how to burn the image. I have never used alcohol, so no comment there. You can not simply burn the file to a DVD, that will not boot. It has to be burned as an image.

Ok so you tried mandriva for about 12 hours and decided you didn't like it. Just out of curiosity, what exactly didn't you like?

I always recommend mandriva to starters. If you don't like it I would recommend ubuntu. You can find good help in the ubuntuguide.

Remember, there is no big difference in the distros other than packages available, packetmanager and window manager. So if you like KDE then i recommend mandriva, if you like gnome, then i recommend ubuntu. Either way you also have gnome in mandriva and Kubuntu (KDE).

good luck in your search for a suitable distro.

i dont mind now ive looked at it a bit more but i do want to have a look at that one too i was told by a friend it would be good as well so im going to leave the mandriva as a second oe on this pc (dell 5100) and play with some others on the little p3 i just built i really want to teach my self how to set up a server with it at least if i use that i dont matter how many times i break it and i managed to get a 250GB hdd for it so plenty of room to try a couple

once again thanks for the help anbd advise is always welcome (when it comes to this i know nothing)

"trial and error" I LOVE IT
