Question Help a Linux Newbie with NVIDIA Graphics

Could someone please give me a hand with this.

Im new to linux and have only beed running Mandrake 10 for 4 days after a while i figured out how to install the source code for the kernel 2.6 from the CD's so i could install the NVIDIA-5336 drivers, but i only have XF86Config-4 file in the /etc/X11 directory. the nvidia readme file tells me that i need to be running the XF86Config V3.x in order for the drivers to work.

i have visited the Xfree86 website but dont know what i need to download as the file list seems endless with all sorts of file extentions and versions, is their a simple solution to this problem or am i just banging my head against a brick wall?

Please dont let me go back to MS with my tail between my legs my pride means too much to me.

Sys Info
OS: Mandrake 10
AMD Athalon 2400 XP
Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 (ASUS 9950GE)
512MB Ram
Sound Blaster Live Value!

p.s. i've tried editing the info in the XF86Config-4 file instead but X server wont start, i also have Mandrake 9.2 on CD would this be a better option??

Thanks

download the driver from nvidia.com and install it (instructions on site) OUTSIDE of x-windows.

Sarson, you already have all you need. I assume you've installed the kernel-source from the installation cd?

You already have the xfree stuff you need, don't worry about it.

Open a terminal window, (tv type piccy in the kde toolbar, bottom left), type su and enter your root password. Then type init 3 and it'll kill the xserver. then follow instruction on nvidias website.

Post back if you need help.

Let me explain a bit better,

NVIDIA drivers are instaled

the readme says i have to edit the config file XF86Config

i tried editing the file XF86Config-4 but when i restarted Xserver the Nvidia Logo was displayed and then crashed back down to command-line

the message read something like "error on command 'glx' "

so im stumped

Thanks for your help all the same.

try this:

type su
press enter
type your root password
press enter
type xf86config and follow the instructions

if you can run xf86config then this will at least give you a reasonable config file to work with. after that, edit your new XF86Config file and do all that needs to be done there according to the nvidia instructions (sorry don't remember them all right off of the top of my head). then see if you can start x that way...

good luck!
