Forcing Java to use another sound daemon

Is it possible to force the java_vm to output to another sound daemon such as ESD? I am using Mandrake 10 in KDE 3.2 and using ESD. If i'm listening to something in XMMS and I try to run a java page that uses sounds, it wont start because ESD has control of the sound device. Flash does not do this and will share the sound device, meaning I'll hear what is playing on XMMS and the Flash program sounds at the same time. Any ideas?

Thanks
