Question firefox 1.5 question [Solved]

Hey ho mandriva forum,

Some advice please?

Where is the best (default?) location to put firefox 1.5 ?

Thus far, I've downloaded it, unpacked it, and managed to put it in /home/john/.mozilla/firefox (which isn't quite the default location from the original mandriva rpm version of firefox, but ???).

I'd like to put it somewhere so that it's available system wide for all users (yes I did remove the mandriva rpm version of firefox, but I don't know if that was a smart thing to do). I can't work out if it's /usr/bin/something, /usr/lib/something or somewhere completely different.

The idea being, that as I understand that the "check for updates" facility now works properly, ideally I should be able to "check for updates" and then be able to install it to the correct location, available for all users (and no it wouldn't matter if I had to do that as root, as long as the various users have access to their own bookmarks/preferences/etc etc).

As ever, any assistance is greatly appreciated.

regards

John

p.s. and yes, I did a search but nothing that I read seemed to point me in the "right" direction

I suggest you put it in /usr/local/firefox - that way it's unlikely to get smashed by being in the way of some "official" Mandriva package. It really doesn't matter, though, as long as you know where you put it later.

Well after lots of digging around, I decided to put it into /usr/local as you suggested. Though I symlinked it to /usr/local/bin so that it was available to other users i.e. that they would have access to their own bookmarks/extensions/preferences etc etc.

It seems to have worked OK. I'll find out when the next update is released as thats the only thing I couldn't check. Other users bookmarks etc seem to work fine.

Thanks for your reply

regards

John

I have done this same thing : /usr/local/bin/firefox but I cannot get firefox to manage bookmarks, edit preferences or anything. It will just open a small blank window.

I have confirmed that the personal stuff is still located in my profile and is writable by me

Any ideas?
