DVD-ROM Drive cannot read DVDs, only CD-ROMs since u/grade to 10
I have installed 10.0 community version & the DVD-ROM drive only works with CDs. If I put in a DVD and try to get the contents I get a message:
' Mount: Wrong Medium Type'
'Please check that the disk is entered correctly'
Reading CDs is fine. I am sure the problem relates to the famous FSTAB file.
If I go to K3b & right mouse click on the DVD-ROM icon and select 'Disk Info', K3b shows the title of the DVD disk and how full it is.
I have tried enabling and disabling supermount and the 'no auto' options in the Mdk Control Centre. Whatever I do doesn't cure the problem.
I have searched google and other Linux website forums for clues on FSTAB without much success. I mean there are plenty of hits, but none describe my symptoms.
Here's the snippet from my FSTAB file:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,unhide,ro 0 0
/dev/hdc is my CDR/W drive (which works fine)
/dev/hdd is the DVD-ROM drive
If I boot into Windows then I can read the drive's contents fine so I am confident that the problem is not with the hardware.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Peter

Hi,
I am very grateful to you for taking the time to reply.
Sad to report that this doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Should I try to remove anything with dvd in the name and reinstall?
I want you to know that I have tried reading some unencrypted DVDs - if that would make any difference.
Best regards
Peter

same problem
I'm afraid, I'm suffering the same problem as you do.
My Burner is a LG-GSA-4040B. CD Reading works flawlessly. DVD Reading works well. Video DVDs (Commercial encrypted ones) don't work.
I have all libdecss libraries correctly installed.
My System is the new Mandrake 10.0.
The strange thing is:
When inserting a DVD, my system isn't able to mount the disk which is unusal. On another computer I own, I have a DVD READER installed and I haven't had any problems playing encrypted DVDs. Even if libdecss isn't installed, the system should be abe to at least mount the DVD, which does NOT mean that you can play the movie.
I have also discovered, that the unit does NOT appear under DVD-ROM in the control center. It just shows as CDROM. Can this be the problem? Or may it be the lack of SCSI emulation in the 2.6.x kernel?

I had a similar problem with 10. I have a DVD Rom drive on my laptop and I was unable to view any DVD's. I also has installed libcodecs but that did not fix it.
I was able to finally fix it by downloading and using URPMI to update mplayer. That downloaded all the depedent packages, after I installed it and rebooted it worked.
Thats what did it for me, maybe that would help someone else.

Do you by any chance have /dev/dvd missing? I know I did when I installed 10.0 (CE or Official...I can't remember now), but mplayer, xine and kmplayer all spit out similar errors you are getting.

Yesterday I've installed WinXP with all spllied drivers and with the PowerDVD and I can't read encrypted DVDs either, so I guess it's a drive problem. I will contact my supplier this afternoon. When inserting a DVD it doesn't apper in the Windows explorer just as it happened in Linux. Maybe a Firmware update will help, but I don't think so. I'll keep you folks up to date.

I just installed 10.0 OE, I have the same burner as you, and HAD the same problem with not being able to play or rip encrypted DVD's, it turned out for me, that supermount would mount the drive after you stick the disk in, I had to manually unmount the drive, then it would play. Best thing is to disable supermount when you have a problem accessing the drive. It took a little getting used to 2.6 kernel, without the SCSI emulation. I have another LG DVD reader, that did the same thing. Its just something else to get used to for me, after using 9.1 for so long.

But did you see the files even if the disk were mounted with supermount? In my case I got an error message saying the disk weren't recognized. I wasn't able to SEE nor to PLAY the files.
