Have you tried a DVD that is not a movie, like a Data DVD?

The problem might be that you don't have tools like libdvdread installed. You might need to add a repository that carries these packages for RH9 (I believe Dag Wieers' does) or else compile them yourself. Please post the output of

rpm -q libdvdread

Welcome to LQ!

I don't know how Redhat works, but one thing I've found very useful
in Slackware to check DVD drives is to run "xine-check" in a terminal.
It will tell you all the status of your DVD drive(s), and what you need
to do to get them working properly, set correct permissions, etc.

DVDs are based on the udf format, make sure it's enabled in your /etc/fstab.

If it says something like:

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0

add "udf" to it like so:

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660, udf noauto,owner,ro 0 0

Don't worry if it doesn't refer to your drive as a DVD-rom; as long as Linux knows your drive can read udf, and you've installed the necessary tools, you're good to go.

Edit:

Nero uses its own proprietary libraries for reading and writing DVDs instead of the standard Linux libraries. This could be why Nero recognized the drive and not any other Linux programs. But follow the other people's instructions, they should get you up and running.
