Hi, and welcome to LQ.

The file that is generated by the nVidia control may need root privileges to write to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

(just save it to your home folder somewhere and copy it later, after you backup the original)
eg. cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig

Secondly, you'll need to restart the x-server to effect the changes. (ctrl+alt+backspace) login.

Cinerama allows you to pass a window from one monitor to the next, giving you a wide screen.

There are more complex configurations. see this post for a walk through. When they mention XF86Config(-4), replace it with xorg.conf. That part has changed, as well as version numbers of course.

Cheers, Glenn
