Angry Auto login not working

I must say I'm getting a bit desperate now, and I am seriously considering giving up Linux and going back to Windows full time, since I'm having nothing but problems. And every problem solved seems to create a new one.

Well, I just installed new Nvidia driver. First it didn't work. but after I put "modprobe nvidia" in /etc/rc.local it works fine. I never had to do that with earlier versions of nvidia or Mandrake. So I start X after installation and everything is fine until I log off. Then I don't get the usual graphical screen with choises to shut off or reboot, I just get thrown out to the text terminal again, and the really horrible thing is that I have to change to root to turn the thing off with "shutdown -h now".

So when I then start again, the machine don't start X and log me in automatically as it did before, I only get the text login.

I have initdefault 5 in /etc/inittab, which should get me to runlevel 5 automatically.
I have checked for automatic login in Mdk Control Center.

Nothing is changed since it worked properly before I installed the Nvidia driver.

Mandrake 10.1 Community
Kernel 2.6.8.1-10mdk
Kde 3.2
Nvidia Geforce 4

Best regards,
Hans Petter

who will soon leave Linux for good if these problems and a few more are not solved soon. Windows at least works fine.

Have u edited your xconf?

Oh, your configuration seems to be ok. But maybe the problem is that when you installed nvdia driver, you forgot to edit xconf. In the Readme file of NVIDIA explains how to do it.
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...629/README.txt

You have to edit the file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

All you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

Good luck!

Well, I know about that, and I did, only that xorg.conf on my system is a link to XF86Config, so I edited that one. Should I let xorg.conf be the actual config file in stead?
