Alternative to /usr/src/linux

I need to do this:

Code:
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make xconfig
but I don't have a /usr directory (just /boot, /, swap, /var, and /home). Could someone please tell me what directory I need to go into?

What message do you receive if you try to cd to the /usr directory? It is a standard directory in Linux so it is odd that a) you don't think you have it and b) that your system works at all without it!

Oh OK thanks - it is there. I just don't have a 'linux' in the /usr/src/ directory. What do I do instead?

Never mind - I need to ask a new question.

You need to be in the root screen to find your usr directory.

What version are you running?

Normally when you install the kernel-source (and I suspect kernel-source-stripped) package /usr/src/linux is created. It is a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux-kernel-version. You can create this link in a terminal window as root with:
Code:
ln -s -T /usr/src/linux-kernel-version /usr/src/linux
For examply, if the installed kernel is version 2.6.17-14mdv, the directory to which you will create your link will be /usr/src/linux-2.6.17-14mdv and the command to create this link will be:
Code:
ln -s -T /usr/src/linux-2.6.17-14mdv /usr/src/linux
HTH,

I found my /usr directory - but because you asked I'm using Mandriva 2007 Spring One.

Thanks - I did that and now I have a blinking red 'linux' box. I can't 'cd' into it, but I've decided the tutorial I'm using isn't working for me anyway.

That's OK. I asked in another thread on LQ how to set up my zip drive and I did get it working.

I was using this tutorial that wanted me to configure the kernel and it had me completely confused. So at least thanks to this thread, I'm not quite as confused
