Ok first I'm no newbie to linux. Only to Mandrake and other RPM based distros
I'm just taking a trip to distro land while waiting for libranet 3.
I have mandrake 10 powerpack. It works quite well so far, except for sound. I'm trying to use alsa on my via82xx. I installed xmms and xmms-alsa I think, and it works like a charm. But the fun stops right there. I cannot get any sound off gstreamer and artsd. I install every gstreamer and arts plugins and I still can't select alsa in my gstreamer settings. I can choose ARTSD, ESD, JACK, OSS and custom. I tried custom and manually entered alsasink, no luck tho... What's that darn package I'm missing? I remember ALSA was there back on debian and I don't remember having installed some weird package... Anyway, If I try rhythmbox it will play like half of the first second of the ogg in an endless loop, I have to kill it to get rid of it.
So I went in KDE to see if the sun was shinning. I fired the kontrol center and went in the sound place, choosed ALSA and clicked apply. It gave me the same thing as with rhythmbox, an endless loop of a very annoying sound, 'til I killed artsd.
Now I am a bit lost. I'm in the audio group, so it should be ok, it does works with xmms, normal line out and optical output works with xmms...
Any hints?
