Screen shots in a post

Hello,

Just a suggestion.

What if we could put screen shots in our post? That way someone could say "gnome is showing me this" along with a screen shot. I think that this will help out the person trying to help.

Someone can summit a post with a screen shot...but then screen shot won't appear until a moderator approves it.

Thoughts?

This topic has been discussed other times in this forum. Simply LQ does not allow loading images because of the additional work, both for the server in terms of load and the moderators in terms of additional check of thread contents. However you can just load the screen shot on your own server or on a free and public one. Then just post the link to the image.

Actually, yes your right. It would require more servers and storage.

This is a good idea...especially since there are free services for this...

But it would be nice don't you agree

It would be more handy for the poster, but for the reader it is quite the same. A simple click with the middle mouse button in Firefox and the image is displayed in a new tab!

I'm interested in further feedback on this issue. If the consensus is that it would improve LQ, we'd certainly look into it further.

I think it would be a nice feature.

I agree that storing the images on the LQ server is not a good idea, but why not allow linked images to be displayed in the forum? This takes no server storage and not that much processing overhead since most things displayed on websites including logos and advertising are images.

AuroraCA, that seems like the worst of both sides of the equation. We'd then have no control over the image going away or changing without notice. Storage concerns these days are minimal to be honest.

So is the ability to post pictures in the Members Choice Awards threads some kind of test drive? I was already wondering why it is possible there.

I'd assume that making that function generally available would lead to image spamming to a certain degree though. I like LQ being focused on text.

I personally don't like it. We'll end up seeing a bunch of "fanboy" crap. If we want to see that, we can point our browsers to *-look.org sites.

If you are compelled to add this feature, please give us an option to turn the images off.

Thanks

What he said.
I'm on a (very) average link - I *certainly* don't need imbedded screenshots. I can go look at a link if needed to help.

Leave it as it is.

Clutter & Confusion

Don't forget the clutter & confusion issue.

In the not so good old days of paper books & correspondence you could separately lay out a letter or paper & the book it referred to, each at its separate relevant section. You could then move your eyes & attention between the two as needed. Tabbed browsing can do much the same thing. When references, be they images or extra long code blocks, are interspersed w/ the questions, comments, & answers about them, they break up the continuity of reading (those questions, comments, & answers) & the readers train of thought. OTOH, if the dialog is separate from the material it refers to, each can be opened in its own tab, or even window, & each read w/ its own continuity.

IMNRHO, images should be stored separately from the text referring to them. Furthermore, I would like to see the ability to store Code blocks separately -- an LQ pastebin, if you will.

I haven't had to post a long Code block in some time, but the next time I do, I'm going to try to put it in my LQ blog.

General Failure, not sure what you mean. Members should not be able to upload attachments in any forum, including the MCA forum.

Keep in mind that if we did implement this, it would simply put a small thumbnail or note in the post (with a link to the full image). That *should* keep the clutter and confusion to a minimum and make the text content the main focus. Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming.

Once of the features I like most, is the text based appeal of LinuxQuestions. Generally I'm against the heavy visual load of images, as those horrible avatars you see in many forums, but looking at the example posted by the Big Chief Jeremy, I have to admit... I like it so much!

Edit: my appreciation was for the message with the thumbnail! Now I see just a link in the message above.
